Content is king. A website that has little to no text-based content will find it extremely difficult to rank. Think back to your school or university days; when submitting an assignment. A well-researched, well thought out piece of writing that answered the question was always more likely to receive a higher grade then an assignment that had very little word count and did not address the question.

This analogy carries over to Google.

A piece of content on a website that is well written, informative and delivers the information based on the keyword typed into Google has a far better chance of ranking well than a piece of content that does not address those factors.

There are a number of things to keep in mind when writing, or having content written for your website. Here are five important ones.

  1. Google ranks web pages. Not websites. Thus all pages on your website needs to have informative, well written content to ensure rankings are possible.
  2. A website’s ‘domain’ authority and ‘page’ authority are two different metrics, but a domain’s authority is the ‘sum of its parts’ and requires all pages to have good page authority (driven by great content) to help increase this metric
  3. Plagiarising content from your competition will not work. It will cause a duplicate content citation on that web page, and downgrade your authority. All content required to be indexed by Google must be unique to your business.
  4. Important pages on the website – home page, about us, services…etc – should have at least 4-500 words per page on them. Pages with less than this volume of word-count will struggle to rank against other web-pages that meet this criteria.
  5. Your content must be structured correctly. Meta information and H1 tags should reflect the content appropriately.

Our process is data-driven.

Ranking a website is not a quick process. It can take months – even years – to position a website for specific set of search terms and so it should be viewed as a long-term investment in your business’ digital strategy.

Once a website (or a page within said website) is positioned at the top of Google’s organic rankings, it often remains there for a significant amount of time. This means that month in, month out, that website will continue to receive ongoing, highly targeted, keyword-driven visitation for its – your business’ – core services.

Gaining enquiry and closing the deal to acquisition new clients is the final piece of the puzzle. Determining what the lifetime value of a new client is worth to your business allows us to develop Return On Investment projections.

We prefer to partner with our clients, rather than simply being just an “agency”. This involves a collaborative approach to achieving rankings for your business.

We are able to rank brand new websites, old websites, and websites that have been previously penalised by Google. It is simply just a process of identifying how Google perceives that website, correcting any errors attributed to that website, improving the content, technical aspects or infrastructure and monitoring, every month, the increase in rankings.

Our campaigns begin with a thorough benchmarking your website. We assess your content, your website’s errors, visitation habits and where you are currently positioned in Google. This analysis helps us to form a road map that we work toward every month.

All our decisions and recommendations are based on real data that we receive from Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools and several third-party pieces of software.

We deliver thorough monthly reporting and provide monthly consultation on how your website is performing, timeframes and any constraints or roadblocks we might be faced with in positioning your website at the top of Google.

Search Engine Optimisation, otherwise known as “SEO” is a strategy designed to help your website rank naturally in Google’s organic area of its search engine.

In most cases, this area can be found beneath the Google map listings, and always below the Google Adwords listings.

This part of the SERPs (Search Engine Ranking Positions) accounts for approximately two-thirds – 65-70% – of the click-throughs to a website. (This is for the top ten listings on page 1) The remaining 30-35% opt to click on the Adwords ads. (Google Adwords falls into the category of search engine marketing and is explained on our Search Engine Marketing page)

Any website that appears as the #1 listing for a given keyword can reasonably expect to receive about 40-50% of the total visitation for a given search volume. Since around 65-70% of that search volume opts to visit a website through the organic listings, the #1 listing for any given search volume can reasonably expect to receive approximately 25-35% of the total search volume for any given keyword.

To put that into practical terms, a keyword that is locally searched for 1,000 times over a 30-day period is likely to see the following breakdown percentages of traffic to a website.

Google does not rank website’s based on subjectivity. It ranks them based on an objective set of results that the Google Algorithm – GoogleBot – determines every time it crawls a website. GoogleBot crawls websites with different frequencies based on the level of user interactivity that website experiences.

A website that experiences significant daily usage from Internet browsers will be crawled on a daily or semi daily basis. Websites that do not have many visitors may be crawled weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Based on hundreds and hundreds of factors relating to your website’s content, infrastructure and technical aspects, Google makes an instantaneous “decision” on how much of an authority your website is for a search term entered into its search engine. From there, it displays those results within the SERPs.

Whilst nobody knows exactly what all of these factors are, our team here at Site Marketing Solutions has a list of factors that have the strongest impact on a website’s rankings. You can download this list here.

Working with hundreds of clients, and assessing the results of thousands of websites has given us these insights; on what works, what generates the fastest results, and what does not.
